Wednesday, June 23, 1999. The Union Pacific 4-8-4 number 844 was crossing the American River about three miles from the Sacramento, California Amtrak Station where the excursion had begun. The excursion, called the City of Tehama, was a trip to Tehama and return to Sacramento that was sponsored by the 1999 NRHS and R&LHS Convention. This was the 844's last trip for a long time as the next day while on display at Railfair '99 it had a boiler tube failure and has not been under steam since.
